First let’s go with Kimetsu (鬼滅). The first Kanji is that of Oni 鬼 or demon who also has reading like Ki. Its meaning, according to kanji dictionary The Compact Nelson is demon, ghost, spirit of the dead. Later the second Kanji is Metsu (滅) which means ruin, destruction, extermination.

At last we have the word Yaiba made up of a single kanji which is 刃 and its meaning is sword. There is another kanji for sword in Japanese and it is katana 刀. If you look closely, both ideograms are similar, but the difference is that the first one has an additional stroke.
Why is yaiba used instead of katana? The Kanji of yaiba 刃 is more used for sharp tools, while the latter is taken more as a weapon.. Finally, the demon hunters use a special weapon called Nichirin and it is intended as a working tool to finish off their rivals.
Then, What does Kimetsu no Yaiba mean? It is the sword to exterminate demons and not something like slayer, which in this case is almost the same, if we consider that demons are living beings.
