Last Wednesday, July 7, the participants and schedule of the new edition of the international friendly tournament between Liga MX and Major League Soccer, the Leagues Cup, after a one-year absence due to the pandemic of COVID-19, the tournament returns and maintains Cruz Azul as the current monarch who was crowned in 2019.
The four qualified Liga MX teams for this year’s edition are Tigres, Pumas, León and Santos, who will join the four qualified MLS clubs: Sporting Kansas City, Orlando City SC, Seattle Sounders FC Y New York City FC.
The Liga MX teams that join the 2021 edition of the competition are the four best placed teams in the general table of the 2020-2021 season, without taking into account the clubs classified to the Concacaf Champions League.
However, there is still a place that could change its owner, if Club León is the winner of the Champion of Champions 2020-2021 of Liga MX (next July 18 against Cruz Azul), Chivas would replace León in Leagues Cup for being the next highest ranked team for the season. This is because the emerald painting, if it is a winner, would participate in the 2021 edition of Champions Cup.
The Leagues Cup which will be played entirely in the United States, is scheduled to begin Aug. 10-12 with the quarterfinal matches.
The semi-finals are scheduled for September 14 and 15, with more details, including stadiums and schedules, to be announced after the quarter-finals.
The grand finale of Leagues Cup, to be played at a neutral venue and announced in the coming weeks, is scheduled for September 22.
