The ‘bomb cyclone’ is a phenomenon caused by a severe change in atmospheric pressure.

These are large, intense mid-latitude storms that are under pressure at their center.

An unprecedented snow storm hit the United States in early February. Several media outlets described this meteorological event as ‘bomb cyclone’, which had the authorities on alert due to strong winds and snowfall that affected around 75 million people on the east coast of that country.

But, what actually is a ‘bomb cyclone’ and why is the term ‘bombogenesis’ also used?

According to geographer Esther Mullens, quoted by National Geographic, “a bomb cyclone is a large and intense storm in the middle latitudes that has low pressure in its center, weather fronts and a variety of associated meteorological conditions.”

The same scientist assured in that medium that bomb cyclones are a consequence of climate change in the world.

about the terms ‘bombogenesis’, the National Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States says on its website says: “Bombogenesis, a popular term used by meteorologists, occurs when a mid-latitude cyclone rapidly intensifies, dropping by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours. A millibar measures atmospheric pressure. This can happen when a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass, such as the air over warm ocean waters. The formation of this rapidly strengthening weather system is a process called bombogenesis, which creates what is known as a bomb cyclone.”

For experts on these issues, these meteorological phenomena are increasingly intense and erratic. “The best example to explain the phenomenon are bomb cyclones. Increasingly explosive, erratic and violent, they are gaining strength much faster than ‘normal’ cyclones”, adds National Geographic on this subject.
