According to German Chancellor, “there is a consensus” on this with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said there was “a consensus” with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, that weapons supplied by the West are only for defense and should not be used in attacks on Russian territory.
The statement was made in an interview with the weekly Bild am Sonntag, published this Sunday (5.feb.2023) in site of publication.
Germany announced on January 25 that would send Leopard 2 main battle tanks for Ukraine. Soon after, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that “again” Russia was being threatened by German tanks.
“His words are part of a series of obscure historical comparisons he uses to justify the attack on Ukraine. Nothing can justify this war. Russia is waging a merciless war against Ukraine,” Scholz told the Bild.
“With our allies, we are giving Ukraine tanks so that they can defend themselves. We carefully weigh each shipment of weapons.”he declared. “This joint approach prevents the war from escalating.”
Scholz was asked if he had received any threats from Putin. Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson said that the Russian president had told him that it would take “just a minute” for an attack on London with a missile during a telephone call between the leaders just before the outbreak of the Ukrainian war on 24 February.
According to Johnson, the phrase was said in a mild tone, appearing to be a joke, while the British warned about the risk of a “total catastrophe” in Europe in the event of an invasion of Ukrainian territory.
The German chancellor said that Putin never threatened him or Germany. “In our phone calls, our very different views on the war in Ukraine are made very clear.”, said Scholz. “I made it very clear to Putin that Russia is solely responsible for the war. For no reason, Russia invaded its neighbor to take parts of Ukraine or the whole country.”
1 YEAR OF WAR
Scholz spoke about how Germany is doing after almost 1 year of war – Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
“Our country has come through this difficult time much better than many feared. I remember several horror scenarios that were prophesied: about a strong winter with mass protests, about cold apartments and people freezing in Germany, about an economic crisis of unimaginable proportions“, he said.
“The good news is that none of that happened. The federal government took a firm stand against the looming crisis — and averted it. We created aid packages worth €300 billion so that businesses and citizens could cope with high gas and electricity prices”, he declared, adding that “the crisis showed what Germany is capable of”.
