Danish cyclist Jonas Weingard suffered fractures in his collarbone and several ribs after a strong fall while participating in the Basque Tour, according to what his Visma-Les team announced.
The cyclist team, which won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023, said in its account on the X website that “it was a terrible fall, but fortunately, it is in a stable condition and is conscious.”
“Examinations at the hospital showed that he suffered a broken collarbone and several ribs, and he is still under observation in the hospital.”
After his fall, the 27-year-old was placed on a stretcher with a neck brace and a breathing apparatus, before he was taken to the hospital.
Among the eight riders who fell in this accident, Australian Jay Fine remained motionless for the longest period, before he was treated by emergency services, in preparation for his transfer to the hospital.
His team, the Emirates, announced that “he is conscious and able to speak.”
Slovenian Primoz Roglic and Belgian Remco Evenepoel were also injured, and were able to recover, but their teams, Bora-Hansgrohe and Soudal Quick-Step, respectively, announced their withdrawal.
Roglic, who was wearing the leader's jersey, left the scene in the car.
The accident occurred about thirty kilometers from the end of the fourth stage, which was scheduled between Echarri Aranas and Logotio.
During a downhill slope of the stage course, several riders slid and crashed into stone blocks and a concrete drain.
The organizers initially decided to stop it, and then the six riders who escaped the accident were allowed to resume the stage won by South African Luis Maintis, but the times will not be counted in the general standings of the Tour, which began on Monday and concludes on Saturday.
