Welfare Research: Occupational well-being of young adults has deteriorated in the service sector: “Korona has not been desired”

Employees in the service sector under the age of 35 feel their well-being at work worse than a year ago.

About a third of the young people felt that their ability to work was reduced or weak.

The reasons include the Korona period and the labor shortage. However, young people have a more positive experience of the work community than older workers.

Experts according to which it is worth paying attention to the organization, recovery and orientation of work in the workplace.

According to respondents working in trade, accommodation and restaurants, real estate services and security, work capacity has deteriorated. In addition, more and more people feel that their own ability to work is poor and that the workload has increased.

Only 40% of young people feel that there is enough recovery skills, even if they have credit for their own skills.

“The decline in the well-being of young people at work shows that the corona has not been recovered in the service sectors. What is needed now is investment in induction and recovery skills, smart work organization and social support. Fortunately, many companies have raised the issue and are investing in it, ”says a senior expert at the National Institute of Occupational Health. Irmeli Pehkonen in the bulletin.

About the challenges nevertheless, positive things also emerged in the responses. Almost 70 per cent of young people in the service sector feel that they receive support from a supervisor and more than 80 per cent from co-workers when needed.

On the other hand, the experience of the justice of the forerunner does not reach as high. Only two-thirds feel that a supervisor treats employees fairly and equitably.

As a patient work and illness have increased in the service sectors for people of all ages.

The shortage of labor in the restaurant sector in particular has risen to headlines, and already last summer there were workers crying shortage. This summer, the challenges will continue as restaurants have even had to close due to labor shortages. The foreclosure has also been affected by profitability.

However, the shortage of labor has caused a situation in the restaurant sector in which summer workers can choose the job they want.

About 3,600 respondents responded to the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health’s survey in May. The largest number of respondents came from the trade sector and the accommodation and restaurant sector.
