Outgoing BMW Motorsport boss Mike Krack has admitted that an expansion of the 2023 program is currently being considered that will see the Monaco manufacturer focus on IMSA.
Krack, who will assume the position of team principal at Aston Martin shortly, explained how the possibility of BMW returning to race the French endurance classic is being discussed precisely to celebrate the success at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. .
A full season in the WEC in 2024 as a factory team is one of the options, Krack confirmed to Motorsport.com, and doing so would expand that program that will see BMW engaging in IMSA next year with two cars managed by the Rahal team.
“We will evaluate what to do in the coming months and try to understand what the next step will be and what will happen after 2023”.
“Krack then revealed how discussions with the WEC promoters and organizers of the 24 Hours of Le Mans are already underway as BMW plans the future of its LMDh prototype.
“If you want to consider a program at Le Mans you have to discuss it with the ACO and commit for a certain duration. However, we have to put all the elements together. There is no definitive decision yet, but time is running out… ”.
Mike Krack then expressed his desire to have customer cars not only in IMSA but also in the WEC.
“Ideally we should have a customer team in IMSA and one in the WRC. With the new LMDh cars it is not a sensible move to go out on track only with the factory team ”.
“Obviously you need to have the interest of the teams and sign the agreements, but if that happens we would be happy.”
The outgoing boss of BMW Motorsport then confirmed compliance with the plans that will see the German manufacturer’s LMDh take to the track for the first time in mid-July.
“Despite all the delivery problems that the automotive industry is facing right now, I am very happy to be able to announce that the schedule will be respected.”
“Maurizio Leschiutta (head of the LMDh project at BMW ed.) And all those involved are doing an excellent job trying to anticipate any problems in the supply chain”.
Krack declined to reveal any details regarding the internal combustion engine that will be installed on the BMW LMDh.
