The 2021 Formula 1 World Championship presented the team’s debut Alpine, so named despite being under total control by Renault. In addition to this novelty in terms of denomination and livery, the same French team has also welcomed the return to the top racing series of Fernando Alonso, in turn absent from the circus scene since 2018, the year in which he seemed to have ended his career in Formula 1 after a lackluster experience in McLaren.
In addition to having touched the podium on the occasion of the Hungarian Grand Prix – among other things, won by his teammate Esteban Ocon – the continuation of the season of the two-time world champion has really convinced critics and experts, who did not imagine such high performances by the 40-year-old from Oviedo. As if that were not enough, Alonso has also signed a contract renewal with the same transalpine team, which will see him thus involved in Formula 1 also on the occasion of the 2022 world championship.
Among the characters most impressed by the performance of the Iberian there is also a former driver of the caliber of Mark Webber: the Australian, who spoke on the podcast F1 Nation, in fact, he praised the talent and the tests of the 2005 and 2006 world champion, to the point of indicating him as one of the drivers on whom to pay more attention in view of the next season: “He is driving very well – commented Webber – I don’t think he will be able to recover two tenths in qualifying at Verstappen or Hamilton, but he has the experience and the ability to build his race in the best possible way. In this sense, it’s amazing and hides a bit of magic, especially in departures. If you analyze his on-boards, you can see how he has a tendency to study the layout outside the track, in what may appear to be a high-risk maneuver ”.
“I was able to share the track with him, so I know what his approach and maneuvers are. You never want to have it in your mirrors for two hours. Speaking with David Coulthard, we noticed how he often gets the better of wheel to wheel, except for the bad accident he had with Esteban Gutierrez in Melbourne. If that episode is excluded, he has rarely been the protagonist of contacts on the track. If you are in front of him, he finds all the ways to put yourself under pressure, and if you are behind, as we saw with Hamilton in Budapest, he is one of the most difficult drivers to overcome. It will be interesting – he concluded – see what he can do next year with the new car. This year he is already doing a good job, but next year will be fascinating. If the Alpine will be able to create a missile, Fernando will be dangerous“.
