I’m at work at the accident station, the start of this week was really congested, and Tuesday Women’s Day was the busiest day of the entire slippery early winter. On Thursday and Friday, the accident station has already been a little calmer.

“Tuesday was a record day all winter. We no longer had the right places at the accident station where people could have been taken, ”Orthopedist Tim Söderlund He tells about the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District (Hus).

People come to the accident station who are unable to stand because of their injured leg, but have to get to sit or lie down. According to Söderlund, the seats ran out in the middle of Tuesday. Of course, those who need their turn also need them.

“The beds ran out and we had to move extra beds to the hallways.”

The most common injuries to be treated in slippery falls are ankle and wrist fractures.

Söderlund found himself on Tuesday that even the studs no longer helped after the snow had fallen on the ice. Under normal circumstances, stud shoes can prevent slipping.

“When I left home in the morning, I noticed after a five-meter walk that there could be congestion today,” Söderlund says.

When the sun is shining and the snow is melting and then the streets are freezing again at night, and after the night there was still snow on Tuesday. The sawing weather has been devastating for walkers.

According to Söderlund, the winter at the accident station has been congested since week three.

“The ski holiday week started to get even faster. Usually people go elsewhere on ski holidays and it has typically been a quieter week for us, not this year. ”

As before in the winters, according to Söderlund, it may have been really congested on some days. This winter has been exceptional in that the slippery period has lasted so long.

According to Söderlund, the congestion this winter is explained not only by the slippery winter but also by the shortage of staff.

“We don’t have as much department space capacity, and this week it has been realized really badly. Even the normal number of operating theaters has not been able to rotate. ”

According to Söderlund, the opening of the bars after the corona restrictions was also reflected in slips.

“When we were able to spend the evening again after the corona, the attention was not quite the same as when I went to work in the morning.”

Of course, there have been a lot of slips during the day on business trips.

When the Töölö accident station is congested, there is always congestion in the Malmi and Haartman emergency services in Helsinki.
