Lightning flashed in the center of Rauma on Wednesday during a strong thunderstorm. The Finnish Meteorological Institute warned that more than 20 millimeters of water could enter Satakunta per hour.

Thunder struck Rauma by force at about three o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday.

There was a lot of water and hail in a short time. Lightning flashed a few times in the city center, and the Rauma regional reporter Kari Sunin according to one lightning had struck the downtown area with a loud bang.

The thunder front arrived from the south. The rain came in a heavy downpour, and flooding began in the center. Water flooded the streets even from rainwater drains when their capacity was insufficient.

The rain lasted for about an hour, and it stopped at about four in the afternoon. During the thunderstorm, the temperature dropped to just over 20 degrees. According to the data of Rauma Pyynpää observation station, more than 19 millimeters of water came in a short time.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute issued a warning about heavy rain in Satakunta. The warning is that rain can come in at more than 20 millimeters per hour.

Forecan meteorologist on duty Juha Föhr said in the early evening that the thunderclouds extending from Turku to Vaasa were expected to be strongest on Satakunta from 3 pm to 6 pm.

“Pretty soon they start to fade over the evening.”

The center of Pori had not been hit by a storm, but Föhr did not dare to guess if it could still happen:

“It’s a coincidence.”

A reader from Lassila told the People of Satakunta after half past seven in the evening that a moment before it had started a heavy downpour accompanied by a rumble, which did not end there.

“Pumping tasks, water in basements and shops. The city sewer cannot draw as much water as the fire, ”said the firefighter on duty Sauli Virtanen said at half past five.

The pumping tasks were mainly in the downtown area. In addition, the rescue service went to clear the fallen trees on Pyhärannantie and Huittistentie, among others.

Around five o’clock, heavy rain caused tasks for the rescue service in Nakkila. Pori on-duty firefighter Jussi Jalonen said that in Nakkila, water was also pumped from basements and fallen trees were cleared.

There were also individual damage prevention tasks elsewhere in Satakunta.

The underpass tunnel on Highway 12 was full of water after 3 p.m.

Eura came to the rescue service for a task related to water transport at about 2.50 pm.

There were two young people rowing in Lake Koskeljärvi, and they had retreated from a thunderstorm that quickly rose near the shore. The young people’s perception of the directions had been disappointing.

“A little sense of direction waned, and the rescue boat took the young people ashore,” the rescue services situation center reported at 4 p.m.

The youngsters survived the storm without injury.
