The weather in the next days: a new heat wave arrives
The pressure on Italy is increasing and the winds tend to weaken almost everywhere. Today Sunday 10 July will be marked by stable weather with rising temperatures in the central-northern regions, but with still bearable heat. P.For the first days of the week – say the Meteo Expert meteorologists – no significant changes are expected: the winds will also weaken in the South, while temperatures will fluctuate on values not too far from the average. Of note was the development in the afternoon of some heat storms on the mountainous areas, especially along the Apennine ridge on Tuesday. Heat intensifying again from Thursday. T.generally sunny weather in most regions, except for scattered cloud cover in the Alpine areas of the Triveneto but with low risk of some rain; always during the day some clouds on the Ligurian West and near the central northern Apennine ridge. Temperatures: maximum rising in the central-northern regions. Warm within the norm with some values still slightly lower than the norm along the Adriatic; tips up 32-33 degrees in the north-west, middle Tyrrhenian and major islands. Winds: moderate Mistral winds over Puglia and the surrounding seas, locally also in Sicily; generally weak elsewhere. Mari: moved lower Adriatic and Ionian, locally also the Tyrrhenian and the Sicilian channel; mostly little moved the other basins.
Coldiretti’s alarm: food for animals at risk
Italy is already forced to import about half of the corn for animal feed from abroad in a context of strong international tensions but the situation is having a devastating impact on all national productions for which decreases that range on average nationally from 30% for rice crops are expected to the 15% for wheat but the production of milk in the stables with cows stressed by the sultry heat is reduced by 20%. In the most affected areas fruit is burning in the fields and on trees with losses up to 15% while lack of water exchange in the Po Delta, the areas of “dead water” are widening with the loss of the 20% of mussels and clams and the attacks of insects and grasshoppers in Sardinia alone have already devastated almost 40 thousand hectares of fields.
In fact, more than half of the Made in Italy at the table is found in Regions that have asked and are about to ask for a state of emergency due to drought, according to Coldiretti’s analysis. The result is damage of over three billion in the countryside but also on the environment, from fires tripled to the melting of glaciers, of which the tragedy of Marmolada is the most dramatic example. Without rainfall they risk halving the national crops of F.orage and corn intended for animal feed, of which Italy is also heavily deficient. This is the alarm launched by Coldiretti on the effects of the worsening of the water emergency situation given that for the next week no precipitation is expected but from mid-July on the contrary a new exceptional heat wave is taking place over Italy with peaks of 40 degrees also in the Po Valley where it is concentrated 1/3 of the national agricultural production and about half of the farms from which excellent Made in Italy cheeses and cured meats are born.
A dramatic situation in a 2022 that has already ranked in the first half as the hottest year ever with a temperature even higher than 0.76 degrees compared to the historical average, but rainfall has also been practically halved along the peninsula with a decline of 45%, according to Coldiretti’s analysis of Isac Cnr data. The gravity is evident on the rivers and on the great national lakes which are all at historical minimum values such as the Po which marks the Ponte della Becca -3.76 meters with a large expanse of sand that occupies most of the river bed, while the great northern lakes that serve as water reserves for populations and agriculture are still at their lowest, with the Maggiore only 29% full and that of Como even dropped to just1.2%.
The farmers are already committed to doing their part to promote the rational use of water, the development of low-impact irrigation systems and innovation with less water-demanding crops, but it must not be forgotten that water is essential to keep agricultural systems alive without which the survival of the territory is at risk, the production of food and the competitiveness of the entire food sector ”says the president of Coldiretti Hector Prandini which underlines the need to address the emergency to save the crops and food independence of the Village and to invest in the future with maintenance, savings, recovery and recycling of waters with the works infrastructural, enhancing the network of reservoirs on the territories, creating basins and also using the former quarries to collect rainwater, In accordance to provided for in the lake plan developed together with Anbi.
