Winter is on the retreat: In the coming week we will see the harbingers of spring in Germany. Nevertheless, there are warnings of storms and black ice.
Munich – The icy cold has receded – now there are “heralds of spring” in Germany in the coming days. It’s going to be significantly greener,” says meteorologist Georg Haas from Weather.com. But not everywhere: “In the Alps, on the other hand, it’s still very wintry.” Nevertheless, there is a lot of sun in the mountains. “In some cases dense clouds are pushing in from the North Sea – but in the Alps you like to be above the clouds. Accordingly, the sky will often be blue over the next few days.”
The following applies to the rest of Germany: “Humid northern air is currently moving in our direction. The center of the high pressure area is to the west of us” – High “Feuka” is currently located roughly over the English Channel. “Over the course of the next week, the high-pressure core will move back in our direction and then be directly overhead. That means lots of sunshine again in the mountains,” says Haas. “The cold air from last is then “east of us”. The German Weather Service predicts a dangerous situation on the coast due to strong winds: “On Saturday on the Baltic Sea and on exposed mountains, stormy gusts or gusts of wind” – the service writes gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour.
“In the lowlands there is sometimes a problem with fog and areas of high fog”
According to Haas, while the sun is shining on the mountains, “in the lowlands there are sometimes problems with fog and high fog areas”, but these will “clear in many places”. At the weekend there will be a lot of clouds and temperatures between one and ten degrees in the lowlands – on the other hand, sun and 12 degrees in the south-west. Haas’ colleague Dominik Jung von weather.net even speaks of up to 16 degrees in the west.
According to Haas, it can get as cold as minus five degrees in the Alps at night. So the winter is not over yet, the nights remain cold. The German Weather Service also warns of “severe frost” in the valleys of the Alps and the Bavarian Forest. There is also a risk of ice here. Haas explains that some precipitation is also to be expected in the north: “Especially in the east it can always rain a little, but in between there are long dry phases.”
According to Haas, at the beginning of the week it is “frost-free” in many places – away from the foggy areas it is “really spring-like”, as are the following days. His conclusion: “Early spring is knocking.” On Tuesday there will be a lot of sunshine and 14 degrees in the west. “Classic high pressure weather this time of year.” (cgsc)
