Weather|Up to 25–30 centimeters of snow can accumulate in northern Lapland in a couple of days.
To Finland an area of low pressure will spread on Wednesday, bringing with it strong winds and heavy rains. We’re just waiting for the noise on Tuesday.
“In land areas, wind gusts are 15-20 meters per second since Wednesday morning. They can cause wind damage,” says the meteorologist on duty Jari Tuovinen From the Institute of Meteorology.
The storm first arrives in southwestern Finland and slowly spreads north and east from there. First the winds get stronger, then the rain area arrives. Rain will start in the southwest Wednesday morning.
It is not a very fast-moving area of low pressure, because the rains will not arrive at the eastern border until the night before Thursday, Tuovinen says.
I’m making a noise gusts of wind are strong enough to cause damage. At least leaves are flying briskly, but trees may fall or branches may be torn off.
In southern Finland, the leaves are still largely on the trees, especially on the maples, Tuovinen states.
“If the wind blows 20 meters per second, a big maple with its leaves is like a big sail.”
The ground is not covered in frost yet, so the frost does not hold the tree roots upright any more, Tuovinen states.
“The wind direction is atypically between east and southeast. Often in autumn storms, the southwest wind is the most typical.”
The wind in addition, plenty of rain is expected. For example, in the capital region, 30 millimeters of water can accumulate in less than a day.
“It’s a pretty good amount when approaching the middle of October like this. At least the ditches are filling up, but not necessarily flooded yet. Instead, large puddles or small floods can form when leaves falling down with the wind collect on manhole covers and drain grates.”
In the capital region, the rains will start before noon on Wednesday, but will intensify in the evening hours. At the same pace as the rain, the wind gets stronger. The rain near the south coast will not stop until the night before Thursday.
However, more heavy rains may be expected already on Friday.
Tuesday night In Lapland, it starts to snow and continues all night.
“There can be quite a snowstorm there on Wednesday morning. 10–15 centimeters of snow can accumulate.”
When Wednesday’s low pressure reaches North Lapland on Wednesday evening, more snow will come with it. By Thursday, there may already be 25–30 centimeters of snow.
If thirty centimeters of snow accumulates, it stays on the ground quite densely for a while, says Tuovinen. However, the snow layer of a few centimeters will melt away rather quickly, as the weather will cool down throughout the country on Thursday.
In the east and north, Tuesday is quite dusty and clear. Cloudiness is increasing in Lapland, and the following days will also be quite cloudy in southern Finland.
