The Finnish Meteorological Institute warns of strong thunderstorms and rain from Uustelmaa to Kainuusi. On Wednesday, the warnings extend to Lapland.

Tuesday night heavy rains and violent thunderstorms are expected in the eastern and southern parts of the country.

Department of Meteorology on the radar image before eight o’clock in the evening, thunderstorms were arriving over the eastern border on the Lappeenranta-Parikkala axis. By then, the most measured gust was “fairly moderate” and moved 13.8 meters per second.

On Tuesday, the area stretching from Uusimaa to Kainuu has been classified as dangerous severe thunderstorm and rain warning. Rescue services are also warning of a rain and thunder front arriving on Tuesday evening.

“Now would be a good time to prepare for possible thunderstorms in the evening!” writes the rescue service of Itä-Uusimaa on Twitter.

The rescue service of South Karelia says that it is increasing management readiness due to the harsh weather.

“Now it’s worth checking the mooring of boats on beaches and piers. Garden furniture and trampolines in yards and gardens should be raised to shelter or secured”, the rescue service advises on Twitter.

So does the Kymenlaakso rescue service warns on Twitter from dangerously strong gusts, lightning and heavy rains associated with thunderstorms.

“There is still time to clean the loose garden furniture from the yard and check the boat’s fastenings.”

Stream and thunderstorms are caused by a warm and moist air mass arriving from the southeast. The rains are mainly local showers and can become heavy.

Locally, several tens of millimeters of water can fall briskly, says the meteorologist Anna Latvala From Foreca.

“Within the same locality, one spot can remain dry and another gets a lot of water up its neck. Heavy rains can also be accompanied by lightning.”

Latvala describes the situation in the next few days as favorable for a good thunderstorm.

“First of all, it requires a temperature distribution in the atmosphere, which means that warm air that is rarer than its surroundings can rise up. In addition, a wind is needed, the direction and intensity of which changes the higher one goes in the atmosphere. The change must be just right, so that it does not disrupt vertical flows.”

In principle, the difference between a normal thundercloud and a thundercloud is small, says Latvala.

“When the warm air flow rises up and the cloud grows high enough, ice crystals can form inside the cloud. Crystals bumping into each other create frictional electricity, which is released as lightning.”

Ice crystals created by vertical air currents can gradually form into grains.

“The stronger the warm air flows up, the bigger ice balls the cloud is able to hold back before they fall down,” explains Latvala.

Wednesday’s the night before, the area of showers will extend south and east of Central Finland. Towards the morning, the deafs form even more widely.

“In the morning, the most rain-sensitive area extends roughly from Western Uusimaa to Finland proper and from Central Finland to the east,” says Latvala.

During Wednesday, the deafness will expand to the western and northern parts of the country, and the focus of thunder and heavy rains will move to the western side of Päijänne. It is likely that some spots in these areas will remain dry as well.

“The lifespan of one thunderstorm is short, an hour or two at most. When a cloud forms and it rains down, it doesn’t have time to stay in one place for long.”

The local amount of rain is also affected by how fast the cumulonimbus clouds move, because a slow-moving cloud can accumulate more rain.

Abundant rains may cause flooding of roads and underpasses from Tuesday evening. For example, motorists should be prepared for the risk of hydroplaning in areas of heavy rain.

On Wednesday, the weather warning classified as dangerous will be extended to cover the area from Posio to Utsjoki. In addition, a potentially dangerous rain and thunder warning is in effect on the strip from Kuusamo to Varsinais-Suomi on Wednesday.

Latvala advises to follow rain radar movements of rain areas, if you suspect that they will hinder your own plans.

“There is always a risk of hail in strong thunderstorms. You shouldn’t be outside when something like that comes. If you’re out for a walk during a thunderstorm, it’s worth taking shelter also because of possible lightning strikes.”

Thunderstorms often also bring with them strong gusts of wind, which can cause dangerous situations for people moving on the water. There is also a risk that strong winds will knock down trees on, for example, power lines or roads.

Thursday thunderstorms seem to be easing in intensity, but there will still be widespread showers from the south to the central, western and eastern parts of the country, as well as to Lapland.

“You can’t say an area where rain doesn’t form at all. The day is widely unstable, and there are local deaf people all over Finland.”

While still on Tuesday, the thermometer was showing scorching readings in the southern parts of the country, as the week progresses, the air generally gets cooler with unstable weather.

There is no sign of a slowdown for the rest of the week either. However, according to Latvala, it is still difficult to predict the location and timing of the rains.

“There may still be thunderstorms on Friday, but they may decrease over the weekend.”
