Blistering heat in New York’s Washington Square Park (Lapresse)
A weekend characterized by two main aspects awaits us: firstly, from Saturday there will be a real anticyclone boom and it will be very hot, in a sort of apex of this first red-hot phase of the season; secondly, on Sunday we will have a high risk of even strong thunderstorms, which locally could also be accompanied by heavy hail.
But let’s go in order. After many hesitations, the North African anticyclone with its boiling air load that will envelop practically all of Italy will govern the weather-climatic picture of our country. This configuration would be more suited to the months of July and August, a period in which we are most used to seeing temperatures rise to exceed the 40 ° C threshold, but by mid-June these values are exceptional. However, this will be precisely the situation we will have to deal with over the weekend.
Saturday the great heat will be accompanied by a rather stable weather context at least for most of the day. However, we must not forget that intense heat and high humidity levels, in the hottest hours, could give rise to sudden heat storms, more likely in any case on the Alpine border mountains. Elsewhere a powerful sun will be the undisputed star of the day.
Things will go a little differently on Sunday: from the west the drafts of humid and relatively less hot air will become more insidious, which will contribute to causing greater cloudiness in the north, especially on the western sectors and on Sardinia. The contrast between the pre-existing strong heat and these new ocean drafts will give greater energy for the development of storm cells that can affect not only the reliefs, but also some flat stretches adjacent to them, especially in Piedmont, Lombardy and Veneto. In these areas, thunderstorms can also take on a strong intensity with dangerous gusts of wind and even large hail.On the rest of the country, African high pressure will continue to dispense sun and heat at will, except for more compact local cloud cover on the Tyrrhenian sectors, where an umbrella will not be necessary. Unlike the air conditioner, it will be extremely useful!
