Arms procurement|According to Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen (kok), the procurement of missiles improves the performance of the defense forces, and the purchase of grenades maintains domestic explosives production and security of supply.
Defense forces buys new longer-range Jassm-Er cruise missiles. Minister of Defense Antti Häkkänen (kok) told about the acquisition on Friday.
The Jassm missiles of the previous generation, which have a range of just under 400 kilometers, have been part of the equipment of the Finnish Air Force’s Hornet equipment for years.
The missiles to be acquired now will be delivered in the schedule for the introduction of the future F-35 multirole fighters, says the Finnish Defense Forces. The US Congress approved the sales license for the missiles in 2020. They have a range of up to a thousand kilometers.
“The range of weapon effect is still of central importance on the battlefield. The acquisition being made now will improve the performance of the defense forces significantly in these respects,” Minister Häkkänen says in a press release of the defense forces.
Defense forces announced on Friday also about another significant arms acquisition.
In the years 2024–2028, the Defense Forces can acquire a total of 50 million euros worth of ammunition from the engineering company Componenta.
The sum will be used to purchase grenade shells and tails for a heavy 120mm mortar.
The Defense Forces itself manufactures the ammunition by adding an explosive and a detonator to the shells. According to Defense Minister Häkkänen, the procurement will maintain security of supply by developing the ability of domestic explosives production.
