Why do you think Termoli was chosen?
“I believe that the fact that in the South a greater share of public funding can be recovered under the NRP has weighed. The government managed to bring the gigafactory to Italy, which is obviously a result, but it was Stellantis who decided where to do it. And, since we are not talking about a charity, the company has chosen where it can accumulate more public contributions ”.
Would you have received less in Turin?
“I don’t know if they would have been less or more in Turin. There wasn’t even time to check it out. There has been a serious delay in this regard ”.

And this is not good because it pits workers, divides factories, divides territories. A government that agrees to be leafed through like a daisy, pitting one community against another without making a synthesis and an overall proposal, is a weak government. A government appeared in front of the multinational Stellantis. Today’s choice humiliates Turin, which, although late, had moved to obtain the gigafactory. Is this the end of an era for the city?
“I don’t know, but Turin certainly has some big problems to face. The transition from the heat engine to the electric will generate a problem for the mechanics of Mirafiori and the Verrone plant, where gearboxes for the heat engine are produced. As is well known, the electric motor does not need changes ”.
We are talking about a total of about 2 thousand workers. Is their place at risk?
“We are speaking in perspective, but it is clear that there is a problem for those processes that will disappear. And there is a problem of employment in the 3 million square meters of Mirafiori, which if not industrially occupied represent a cost, one of those costs that Tavares said he wanted to rationalize. In the Turin plants, layoffs have been going on for 14 years. It will be necessary to be very attentive to volumes and products, but if in Turin one does only luxury, employment is not there for everyone ”.
In short, there is little to be optimistic.
“When it comes to discussing Turin, I expect problems. This choice on the gigafactory freezes Turin in a situation of crisis and does not offer it an opportunity for the future ”.
