Earlier, Petro congratulated his “friend” Claudia Sheinbaum and applauded that Mexico has elected “a progressive as the first president in its history” after the victory of the leftist candidate this Sunday at the polls.

“It is a triumph for the Mexican people and for their democracy. Congratulations to my friend Claudia Sheinbaum, together we will work to see Latin America united and progressing,” Petro said in a message on his X account, where he included a photo next to the elected president.

“We congratulate and embrace Claudia Sheinbaum, the first female president of Mexico. The ties of freedom and justice that unite our people date back to historical leaders such as General José María Melo and Benito Juárez. We look forward to a highly successful mandate, working together to strengthen the change towards social justice in Mexico and throughout the region,” Márquez added on social networks.
Sheinbaum made history by being elected this Sunday as the first female president of Mexico in 200 years, after obtaining between 58.3% and 60.7% of the votes, according to the quick count of the National Electoral Institute (INE).

“Claudia helped the M-19 in Mexico during the underground times. From a very young age she has been a great social fighter. A woman from the left leading one of the largest nations in the world,” said the Colombian president in a message in your X account.

In the message, along with a photo with Sheinbaum, Petro added: “May your leadership help us lead Latin America towards a decarbonized economy and the great democratic leap: the revolution of life.”
The M-19 was an urban guerrilla that operated in Colombia from the mid-1970s until the signing of peace and its demobilization in 1990, after which it became a political party with which its members entered politics, among them the now president Gustavo Petro.
