US president says decision to overturn federal abortion protection sends country back ‘150 years in time’
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, made a statement this Friday (June 24, 2022) criticizing the Supreme Court’s decision on the jurisprudence that allows abortion in the country. Biden called the decision “tragic mistake” and asked Congress to create a Federal Law to ensure the right.
Termination of pregnancy has been legal in the country since 1970 thanks to a decision known as “Roe vs Wade”, which gave federal jurisprudence to the law. According to the Supreme Court’s opinion, the case was wrongly decided, as the US Constitution does not specifically mention abortion.
In his speech, Biden said the decision was prompted by a “extreme ideology” and stated that he will do his best to “protect women’s health”. The US president also called for peaceful protests in the country.
“America goes back 150 years in time. Women can be punished for wanting to protect their own health, or doctors will be criminalized for doing their duty of care.”said Biden.
With the decision, each State starts to define its own rules on the legal termination of pregnancy. As such, 25 US states can immediately ban access to legal abortion. While another 22 can continue to ensure the right. Mississippi, Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma and Louisiana, known conservative strongholds, are among those expected to adhere to the ban.
In May, the agency confirmed the veracity of a leaked draft that contained a ruling by house judges to overturn abortion jurisprudence across the US. The document caused protests across the country against the possibility of the decision.
