The United States also joined in the messages of congratulations to the president-elect of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, who prevailed in the second presidential round this Sunday with more than 11 million votes.
The message to the country and the president-elect was delivered by the United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, who spoke about the results through his Twitter account and through a statement on the website of the US Department of State.

First of all, Blinken sent a message of congratulations to the Colombian people for election day and for strengthening democracy through the elections.
“I congratulate the people of Colombia for making their voices heard in free and fair presidential elections. We congratulate the many officials, public servants, and volunteers whose dedication made these elections possible,” the statement read.
In his message, the Secretary of State recalled that his country shares with Colombia deep ties and interests in terms of democracy, security, prosperity, economy and human rights.

“Cooperation between the United States and Colombia has improved public health, livelihoods, the rule of law, and environmental protection both in our countries and throughout the region,” the text says.
For this reason, Blinken sent a message to Petro and stated that The United States looks forward to continuing the strong partnership it has with Colombia after the triumph of the leader of the Historical Pact.
“We look forward to working with President-elect Petro to further strengthen the relationship between the United States and Colombia and lead our nations toward a better future,” he added.

In recent days, specifically in the framework of the celebrations of the 200 years of relations between the United States and Colombia, Blinken had already expressed that the United States would continue to work with the Colombian government, regardless of who was elected in the second presidential round.
“Regardless of the outcome, the US is excited to work with the new administration to continue the ongoing process and relationship that generations of officials and our people have built together,” Blinken said a few days ago.
