The chief of the Israeli General Staff, Herzi Halevi, said this Sunday (6) that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) defeated the military wing of the terrorist group Hamas – although it did not completely eliminate its capacity for action -, and that his country also dealt a “severe” blow to Hezbollah, which he said “lost its entire senior leadership.”
“A year has passed, and we have defeated the military wing of Hamas. We have dealt a severe blow to Hezbollah, which has lost its entire senior leadership. We will not stop,” Halevi said in a letter to the military.
The chief of the Israeli General Staff also spoke about the Hamas terrorist attack against Israel, which turns one year old this Monday (7). According to Halevi, this attack, which took place on October 7, 2023, which left 1,200 people dead in Israeli territory, was a terrible failure of Israel’s defense, whose troops “failed to protect its citizens”. Halevi said that at this time, Israel’s forces must recognize their “failures” and “learn” from them.
“A year has passed since October 7th, the day we failed in our mission to protect the citizens of the State of Israel. We are now in the Ten Days of Repentance. October 7th is not only a day of remembrance, but also a call for deep introspection, an acknowledgment of our failures, and a commitment to learn from them,” Halevi said in the letter.
“We are adopting an offensive, tactical and proactive approach on all fronts, adapting our defensive strategies on all borders and realizing that the Israel Defense Forces must be larger, capable of taking good care of its people”, he analyzed.
This Monday, one year after the attacks, protests by relatives of Hamas victims are expected in front of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem. A ceremony is also planned at kibbutz Re’im, site of the NOVA music festival, target of a Hamas massacre, where a siren will sound at 6:29 am (the time the attack began).
Among other events throughout the day, a ceremony for the families of the victims of October 7th will be held at 7pm local time (1pm Brasília time) in Tel Aviv’s Yarkon Park, which is closed to the public due to security guidelines imposed on the country. after the offensive in Lebanon.
