The intense heat waves and the prolonged drought in Mexico have caused the main dams to be left without water, such is the case of the Centenario Dam, located in Tequisquiapan, Querétaro.
With a storage capacity of 10 million cubic meters, this vital body of water has been one of the most affected in the state.
The National Water Commission (Conagua) has confirmed that the Centenario dam, as well as others in the entity, have seen their water levels reduced to historic lows.
According to the Conagua report, at the beginning of 2024, storage in lto Centenario dam It was only 2.9%, but the lack of rain and high temperatures have accelerated the drought, leaving the receiving vessel completely empty in recent days.

The situation is not exclusive to the Centenario dam. The drought has affected numerous bodies of water in Querétaro, including the La Llave and La Venta dams in Pedro Escobedo.
The lack of rain in recent years has been a determining factor, preventing the natural recharge of these reservoirs.
Despite the current serious situation, Conagua maintains hope for an improvement in the water outlook for the state. It is expected that the rains predicted for this year can contribute to the recharge of the dams and banks of Tequisquiapan and other affected locations.
However, uncertainty persists and the federal agency warns that full recovery could take time.
The contrast with the current situation is evident if we remember 2021, when heavy rains in September and October led to the Centenario dam receiving 25% more water than its capacity, forcing the gates to be opened to release the excess and causing flooding. in the center of Tequisquiapan.
At that time, runoff from the State of Mexico, Hidalgo and San Juan del Río overflowed the dam, causing severe damage.
With the dam now completely dry, it is common to see residents crossing the receiving basin on foot, in vehicles, on horseback or on dirt bikes.
The image of people crossing what was once a full body of water, now empty and dusty, symbolizes the severity of the crisis facing Querétaro.
