StreamThe band Son Mieux from The Hague experienced its big breakthrough with the public this year, but it just didn’t come from a show with visitors – due to the corona measures. And so the group releases its new album The mustard seed today at 8.30 pm through a live stream, which can also be followed on this site via ad.nl/sonmieux.

Son Mieux has been working on the road for some years, but this year had a very special meaning for the band. Partly thanks to radio stations that put their songs on display, the band had its breakthrough with the general public. A dream come true. But just when a big show in TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht was on the agenda, strict corona measures were announced again. For a moment the group saw their dream go up in smoke, but, says frontman Camiel Meiresonne: “We couldn’t skip the album release.”
And so the band, known for songs like 1992 and drive, to let the concert continue on Friday. Although without an audience, but through a livestream that everyone can watch. ,,We were rehearsing when we were told that it couldn’t go on. I felt we also had a show that lends itself to a live stream. A beautiful course, resting points and a visual spectacle. We conjured that livestream out of the top hat in a few days. It was tough, but it was nice that we could do it together”, explains Camiel (28), who describes the past year mainly as ‘crazy’.
And it was certainly a ‘crazy’ year for the band. From a major breakthrough, sold-out shows to a live stream; the careers of the musicians from The Hague gained momentum. ,,In 2020 we really withdrew for a while to work on our second album. So when we released our first single from that record at the beginning of this year, it was exciting,” Camiel confesses. He continues: ,,I am very happy with the digital world in which we live. If this crisis had happened in the 1960s, we would have been in a very different position,” jokes Camiel, who sometimes still can’t believe that they have achieved national fame.
That sudden familiarity sometimes makes it difficult, in corona time. ,,The lack of shows is therefore great. The halls are suddenly sold out,” explains the singer. He argues that there is a need for connection right now. The musicians hope to give viewers a nice evening tonight.
The band still has plenty of ambitions. Bruce Springsteen even knows how to make a lawn with 50,000 people on it feel like they’re in the pub with him. That is a goal for us.” Today Son Mieux will especially enjoy it. “Then the record belongs to the world and no longer just ours.”
The livestream can be followed from 20.30 pm via ad.nl/sonmieux
Finely orchestrated quality pop
Son Mieux’s second album really isn’t out until today, but it sounds like it’s been around for a long time. That is a compliment to the band from The Hague that had its breakthrough with the general public in 2021. That’s what the company did with catchy singles like 1992, Drive and Dancing at the doors of heaven. Songs that are right, easy to listen to and timeless.
It’s exactly like the entire ten-song album sounds. The band of frontman Camiel Meiresonne brings finely orchestrated quality pop without concessions, whereby the choice for singles must have been difficult. That’s it with The mustard seed: actually all songs are suitable for the radio, including the title track. That is not always a good sign – after all, it can indicate volatility – but in this case it certainly is.
That the band has more to offer than just uplifting songs becomes clear towards the end, where the ballads Trying and heavy water form a nice resting point. If this is the standard, Son Mieux has acquired its own permanent place in the premier league of Dutch pop music between bands such as Di-Rect and Chef’Special.
