The United States on Monday advised its citizens not to travel to Rwanda due to the presence of the Marburg virus in the African country.
The US State Department said that it advises US citizens to “reconsider” any trip they intend to take to this country due to the presence of the Marburg virus there.
The Ministry raised travel advisories related to Rwanda from a Category 2 warning to a Category 3 warning on a scale of 4 ascending categories. A category three warning means “do not travel.”
Marburg virus causes hemorrhagic fever similar to that caused by the Ebola virus.
Since the first infections were announced in Marburg on September 28, the number of people infected with the virus has risen to 12, most of them medical workers.
The death rate from this virus reaches 88%.
The extremely dangerous virus causes severe fever, often accompanied by bleeding, affecting many organs of the body.
According to the Rwandan Ministry of Health, about 41 cases of infection have been recorded throughout the country.
The Marburg virus is part of the filovirus family, to which the Ebola virus also belongs, which has caused several deadly epidemics in Africa.
