Warner Bros. Discovery is in serious financial trouble and among the options put in place to recover, that of the sale of its video game divisionconsidered one of the multinational’s “minor activities”. The sale, along with that of other secondary divisions, would avoid the “nuclear option”, that is, the complete split of the company.
The news was reported by the Financial Times, according to which the management, including CEO David Zaslav, is considering the sale of the video game division, which includes original series like Mortal Kombatand long-running transmedia series like the DC Universe and Harry Potter.
Back on sale
After its merger with Discovery in 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery has repeatedly stated that it wants to stay in the video game industry. In particular, it has invested in live services, but without achieving great results.
In 2023, however, it achieved great success with the launch of the single-player role-playing game Hogwarts Legacy, but saw the terrible flops of MultiVersus first and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in 2024. Even the return of MultiVersus in a revised and corrected edition does not seem to have found the hoped-for success.
According to the Financial Times, selling the video game division could be the best solution for Warner, which would avoid legal and content complications.
Interestingly, this is the second time in the last ten years that Warner Bros. Games has been up for sale. Back in 2020, Microsoft and Take-Two came forward to acquire it. At the time, the label was still owned by AT&T and the deal was valued at around $4 billion.
However, nothing came of it and Warner’s video game division remained autonomous. Microsoft, however, remained in very close relations with the company, as leaked by some documents from 2023, which emerged during the acquisition process of Activision Blizzard, which showed its interest in bringing Gotham Knights, Mortal Kombat 1 and Suicide Squad on Game Pass for prices between 50 and 250 million dollars each.
It is currently unclear what Warner Bros. Games is worth overall, given the failures it has accumulated in recent years, excluding Hogwarts Legacy.
