The war between Russia and Ukraine has caused disruptions in production chains around the world. Problems such as the lack of raw materials affect several sectors of the industry and, in addition to often making it impossible, delay the delivery of orders, for example, vehicles by automakers. And the electrified car segment is also feeling the impacts of the conflict in Europe and at a crucial point for its operation: the network of charging stations. The lack of components already affects the production of chargers, a situation that should worsen if manufacturers continue to face irregularities in the distribution of inputs. The alert is made by Gustavo Tannure, CEO of Easy Volt. “There are no more shippers for immediate delivery in the country,” he said.
The brand, also known as EZVolt, is a reference in charger networks in the country, with more than 150 points in nine states – the amount exceeds 350 if the equipment located in residential buildings, the main focus, is counted. The goal is to reach 1,000 points by the end of 2022, but the flag has found it difficult to acquire the devices.
The lack of components is one of the justifications revealed by the executive for the delay in receiving the equipment, a period that can take from 60 days, in the case of wallbox (fast chargers), to 120 days, in reference to the ultra-fast, found mainly on roads. The situation is complicated when orders involve higher volume. Given the situation, the way has been to stagger the demands. “In an order of type 500 chargers, the output was to receive 150 in one month, another 150 in the next and the rest (200) in the following month. We are making the schedules.”
Tannure reveals frequent meetings with manufacturers such as ABB, Weg, Siemens, Schneider, Nansen and E-Wolf, most of them European multinationals. “We are moving the market. But there is no prompt delivery.” To complicate matters, the CEO found a 20% increase in equipment prices since last year. The average initial value for acquiring a home charger is R$6,000, while one for road supply costs R$600,000. “I don’t know if it’s a reflection of the exchange rate or inflation. But the cost has increased.”
The difficulty in obtaining chargers is confirmed by Davi Bertoncello, CEO of Tupinambá Energia, one of the pioneers in operating a network of electric stations across the country. The company has 100 points of its own throughout Brazil and is expected to reach 1,000 by the end of the year. The startup’s output today has been to work with minimal inventory. “We are re-planning the next steps very carefully and in advance to try not to suffer,” he said. According to the executive, in addition to the pandemic issue, the war forced companies to make unusual changes to schedules, as most parts of the devices come from China.
Bertoncello believes that the difficulty of access to inputs by manufacturers can bring major complications to the issue of electric mobility, precisely because of the moment of the market – it presented a high of 93% in January 2022 in the annual comparison. “This phase of accelerated growth needs to be driven by the ease of access to this hardware,” he said. “The issue of war is a concern and depending on how long it lasts, it could impact the expansion of the electricity grid in Brazil. Currently, there are about 1,000 electric stations in the country, with the forecast to reach 3,000 by the end of December, according to the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association.
