Schalke cancels the Gazprom brand from its shirts
The war in Ukraine also affects the world of sport. The general boycott of Russia is also part of the boycott of Gazprom, the energy giant that sponsors both the German club Schalke 04 and Uefa, the government of European football. The Gelsenkirchen club in the last match of the German Serie B against Karlsruher covered the Gazprom logo with a patch, replacing it with the name of the team.
Now comes the final decision: “The board of directors and the supervisory board of FC Schalke 04 have reached an agreement for to prematurely end the club’s partnership with Gazprom. The club is currently in discussion with representatives of the current sponsor and further information will be released at a later date. This decision is without prejudice to the club’s financial capabilities. The club management is confident of being able to announce a new partner in the near future. “
Decisions are now awaited from Uefa, also sponsored by Gazprom for an amount of approximately 40 million per year. The Russian group has sponsored the Champions League since 2012 and last year it had extended its contract with Uefa until 2024. It was also a partner of Euro 2020, and it would also be a partner of Euro 2024. The 2022 Champions League final would be due to St. Petersburg, home of Gazprom, but UEFA has decided to move it to Paris.
