The world quickly imposed sanctions on Russia after the country’s invasion of Ukraine last week. Formula 1 was no different and started to go into action last week when it excluded the Sochi GP from the 2022 calendar. Another measure that should take place will be the dismissal of Russian driver Nikita Mazepin, from the American team Hass.
The driver was pulled from a press conference last week and according to German Sky Sports, the Haas team will not continue with Mazepin for the current season. This would be a result of the end of the sponsorship deal of the Russian company, UralKali that belongs to Mazepin’s father. Who should take his place on the grid will be the Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi, current test driver for Haas.

If Pietro runs the entire season for Haas, it will be the first time a Brazilian driver has been on the F1 grid full-time since Felipe Massa.
Grandson of two-time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi, Pietro began his racing career in NASCAR and in 2013 made his debut in Formula 4 and the Protyre Formula Renault Championship, before winning the latter in 2014. Fittipaldi continued his ascent and the following year competed in the Championship. FIA Formula 3 European Championship.
With stints in Formula Indy, the Brazilian arrived in F1 as a test driver and even raced two Grands Prix in 2020, when he had to replace Romain Grosjean after the Frenchman suffered a serious accident at the Bahrain GP.
In 2021, Pietro was confirmed in his role as Haas’ test and reserve pilot. Now Fittipaldi could become the team’s second driver in the next round of testing in Bahrain next week.
