The development of STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl It feels like a real odyssey, and it’s almost incredible to think that the very long process is now almost over, with the game coming out on November 20 on PC and Xbox Series X|S. This journey deserves to be told, and it will be through Wargamea documentary focused on the development history of STALKER 2.
Directed by Andrew Stephan, War Game is built by the same authors of Power On: The Story of Xbox, the award-winning documentary on the history of Xbox, which already guarantees a notable level of quality for this new production, which promises to reveal all the dramatic background to this incredible odyssey.
The game’s history begins in 2012 and was initially characterized by events that could be defined as “standard” for a video game production and which led to the first postponements, cancellations and reboots. However, to these was added the drama of theinvasion of Ukraine and war in which the developers themselves participated.
A story that deserves to be told
The documentary retraces the entire history of STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl and the difficulties faced by GDC Game World, also closely recounting this last phase which involved the dramatic events in the country, up to the need to move the studios in order to complete the work safely.
“It wasn’t really my dream to make this film,” creative director Maria Grygorovych told Variety, introducing War Game, “But I really think that it is important to share… We are not public people and it is difficult to share something personal, but when Microsoft offered us this opportunity, we thought it was important to share with the world how difficult it is to live in times of war.”
“Seeing specific accounts of true stories, perhaps someone can better imagine how difficult such a situation is and why every war is something horrible. For me, it is impossible to find a reason to start a war.”
Some developers from GSC Game World, including programmers, quality, community, and other divisions, took an active part in the war. Volodymyr Yezhov lost his life during the fighting to defend the city of Bakhmut in December 2022.
These stories will be immortalized in the documentary War Game, which will be released on YouTube on October 3, as mentioned in the announcement trailer.
