John Furner, CEO of Walmart in the United States, explained at the time that it was a reward for the sacrifices that employees had made during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Furner said the idea to take the break on Thanksgiving Day originally came from a company employee in Texas.
On the other hand, Walmart stores are expected to open during their normal hours on Wednesday November 27 and Black Friday. After Thanksgiving they will also close their locations for Christmas.
