Volkswagen boss Herbert Diess has already expressed his rejection of the hydrogen drive. Now he appeals to politicians to listen to science.
Wolfsburg – Hydrogen drives are seen as a serious alternative technology to electric drives in order to bring about the mobility revolution. German manufacturers are also jumping on this bandwagon. So plans about BMW a hydrogen car * (hna.de reported *). In Kassel, those interested can even get one rare hydrogen car with car sharing * testing.
But not everyone is convinced of the innovative technology. The CEO recently spoke of Volkswagen*, against it. “The hydrogen car is demonstrably not the climate solution,” said Herbert Diess in a post Twitter *. “Electrification has prevailed in traffic.”
This is directed on Twitter with an appeal to politics
The hydrogen car is proven NOT the air conditioning solution. Electrification has established itself in traffic. Sham debates are a waste of time. Please listen to the science! @ArminLaschet @OlafScholz @andreasscheuer @ABaerbock https://t.co/LfErDmBs5R

According to Herbert Diess, sham debates are a pure waste of time, which is why he recommends: “Please listen to science.” So that his demand is heard, he marked the politicians Andreas Scheuer (CSU), Armin Laschet (CDU), Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Annalena Baerbock (Greens) in his tweet, referring to an article by “Handelsblatt”.
This deals with a study by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), according to which the hydrogen drive is not suitable for several reasons to replace the combustion engine on a large scale and thus bring about the mobility revolution. “Such fuels as a universal climate solution are a bit of a false promise,” said Falko Ueckerdt from PIK in the article.
“While they are wonderfully versatile, they cannot be expected to replace fossil fuels on a large scale. This is only possible with direct electrification. ”The study author cites the low availability of hydrogen-based fuels as the reason for this. These “will likely be very scarce and uncompetitive for at least another decade”.
Transport Minister Scheuer disagrees with VW boss Herbert Diess
I think it is wrong to concentrate on just ONE drive technology. Out #Climate view and as export world champion Germany 🇩🇪 we have to continue researching ALL new technologies and with our #Innovations and products supply the world. https://t.co/2I3cOEicrt
– Andreas Scheuer (@andreasscheuer) May 19, 2021
However, this opinion is met with resistance, as shown by the tweet from VW boss Herbert Diess – among other things from the politicians he appealed. He received answers to his request to “please listen to science” from, among others, Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer, who wrote: “I think it is wrong to concentrate on just one drive technology.”
From a climate point of view and as Germany’s world champion in exports, one must continue researching all new technologies and supply the world with innovations and products. He is also sure that a global market for hydrogen will emerge. The Minister of Transport hardly received approval for this view – at least not from the majority of the commenting Twitter users.
For example, one user asks himself: “How can you utter so much nonsense with so little knowledge and expertise?” because they think they know better than anyone else.
Herbert Diess received support not least from Tesla boss Elon Musk, who also commented on his tweet: “Diess is right. Hydrogen is a mind-boggling form of energy storage for cars. It is hardly worth considering for the upper stage of a rocket, and that would be the most convincing application. ” *hna.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
