The owner of Tesla and Twitter, Elon MuskHe is a great defender of development towards autonomous driving, since he is sure that the future of the motor sector passes by, as reflected in his commitment to the robotaxi. In fact, the automotive company’s plan is to launch an autonomous car service in Texas next June, placing the first stone of an ambitious plan. Now, Volvo seems to have detected the advantages of this technology, and has decided to produce autonomous trucks, which could revolutionize the transport sector.
Volvo, owned by China Geely, has reached an agreement with the Startup Waabi for Develop and distribute autonomous trucks. Specifically, the firm founded in Sweden will integrate the Waabi Driver system in its autonomous driving tool for trucks, as well as in the production of the autonomous model VNL VNL Autonomous Manufactured at the New River Valley plant, in Virginia (USA). The Autonomous VNL premiered in May 2024, and began its activity last December, working within the framework of an agreement with DHL.
Waabi technology operates with Artiificial Intelligencewhich allows autonomous trucks to process and understand the various scenarios that can be found on the road. The training of this AI constitutes a procedure away from the test method and error of huge fleets of vehicles, allowing it to propose to the algorithm multiple situations. In this way, Volvo expands his confidence in Waabi, of which he is the main strategic investor.
Other firms such as Uber, Porsche and Nvidia are also Waabi investors. In fact, in March 2024, the Startup and the signature of Jensen Huang reached an agreement to use the Drive Thor computational platform in their generative AI applications oriented to autonomous driving. This computational platform “integrates a wide variety of intelligent functions in the same computer system, offering autonomous driving and parking, driver monitoring and passengers and cabin with AI -based functions”, according to the company.
In fact, the first company that acquired the Drive Thorlaunched in September 2022, was Zeekr, a subsidiary firm by Geely. This indicates that the Chinese firm has seen potential in autonomous driving, accelerating investment in it to place itself in a good position in the future global car market.
