Volt Member of Parliament Nilüfer Gundogan filed summary proceedings against her own party on Friday in order to undo her suspension. Her lawyer Geert-Jan Knoops announced this in a press release. Last Sunday, the MP was suspended by Volt after reports of “transgressive behavior”. It is not known exactly what Gundogan is accused of.
In addition to lifting the suspension, Gündogan demands compensation. In addition, she wants Volt to rectify certain statements. Gundogan says he regrets that “it had to come to this”. Gündogan also believes that she has given Volt a chance to resolve the situation without legal action.
Volt suspended Gundogan after the reports to “create a safe environment for those involved”. The party engages an outside agency to investigate the matter. The summary proceedings will go to court on February 28. Earlier, Gündogan already announced that she will retain her House of Representatives seat in any case, even if she eventually has to leave Volt.
Response Volt
In a reaction The party wrote on Friday that it had heard of the summary proceedings through various media and that it was „regrettable that they [Gündogan] considers it necessary to make substantive statements about the ongoing investigation”. In an interview with de Volkskrant Gundogan speaks of one complaint that would have been made against her, but according to Volt it concerns “several reports” from people from “different layers of the party”. Gündoğan’s accusation that she was not told about the reason for her suspension is also incorrect, according to Volt. “Last Sunday it was indicated that it concerns reports that indicate transgressive behavior,” the statement said.
Gundoğan would not have responded to “repeated invitations” from an independent research firm to discuss the complaints, Volt said. “We regret that Nilüfer Gündoğan is not cooperating with the investigation, but instead expresses himself through the media.” Volt is still not making any statements about the content of the reports against Gündoğan.
