Katowice – The Italian men’s volleyball team is world champion. The Azzurri led by Fede ‘De Giorgi in the final in Katowice beat Poland, host and defending champion 3-1 in comeback and conquered the trophy for the fourth time in history. A success expected for 24 years.
After the victory with Slovenia in the semifinals, the Azzurri had reached the final after just 24 years. It was in fact 1998 when Italy played and won gold against the then Yugoslavia. This evening was the fifth final in the blue history after the silver of ’78 and the golds of ’90, ’94 and ’98. For the coach De Giorgi it is the fourth success in his career, the first as a coach in addition to the European one, after the three world titles from ’90 to ’98 as a player.
