Volkswagen aspires to build 800,000 electric cars in 2022. The German giant wants to target the rival par excellence in the field of battery-powered cars, namely Tesla, which is why the target of 800,000 electric cars to be produced in the current year is a number destined to expand in the years to come: the German carmaker plans to build 1.3 million electric vehicles in 2023, and works to ensure that battery-powered cars account for 50% of all its production by the end of this decade.
If the estimates announced by Volkswagen for the current year are also confirmed in practice, the German carmaker would be placed in second position behind only Tesla precisely, which at the end of 2022 aims to assemble 1.5 million electric cars. The run-up to the giant led by Elon Musk is far from simple, however, for Volkswagen: Herbert Diess, the CEO of the German group, reiterated in recent days that overtaking Tesla as the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer by 2025 will not be easy but that does not mean that Volkswagen will give up. In short, the rivalry remains very heated and for the German company the primacy of Tesla still remains a lot distant: the goal is to fill the gap gradually, to then attempt the definitive overtaking in the second half of the decade.
