The rivalry between Volkswagen and Tesla it shows no sign of diminishing. The construction of the new Gigafactory of the Palo Alto car manufacturer on the outskirts of Berlin has done nothing but throw more fuel on the fire: Volkswagen knows that the step taken by Tesla risks making the business of the brand led by Elon Musk fly also in Europe, and therefore certainly cannot stand still and watch. Keeping up with its leading rival in the electric car segment it shouldn’t be a big deal for the German group, but this could have some serious consequences.
This is confirmed by Herbert Diess, the CEO of the Volkswagen Group, who said he was confident in view of the future. Diess has no doubts, however, even about the consequences of this rivalry: Volkswagen will be able to keep pace with Tesla in the coming years, but this will involve further cost cuts, including a reduction in the number of staff employed at the main plant in Wolfsburg. The impact of this race for leadership in the global automotive sector therefore risks hitting Volkswagen hard, which, as mentioned, must now also deal with the new “threatening” Gigafactory Tesla in Germany. On which, however, Diess expresses positive words: according to the CEO of the German group this new factory will establish a new benchmark in terms of production efficiency.
