Transporter, “Bulli” for the Germans, Volkswagen minibus, Volkswagen van, the past of light commercial transport for the German company is carved with these names and nicknames of the compact vehicle (originally derived from the mechanics of the Beetle) which has been handling goods and people since 1949 non-stop all over the world. But the needs of modern cities and the immediate future require the transition to electric propulsion. After the concept shown in 2017, now is the time to put the battery-powered heirs of that very important vehicle on the road. On March 9, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz will make its world premiere, together with its companion ID.Buzz Cargo. The first is the five-seater minibus, the second the van. After the start of production within the first half of 2022, the electric Bulli (also known as e-Bulli) will be launched on the European markets and in the United States in the autumn.
Volkswagen ID.Buzz five seats, technical characteristics
–
The Volkswagen ID.Buzz van was born from Meb, the well-known platform dedicated to electric vehicles. But it should be remembered that the Wolfsburg house already showed an experimental battery-powered prototype 50 years ago: in fact, in 1972 a Bulli with rear electric motor and range of 85 kilometers was exhibited at the Hannover Fair. In the five-seater version ID. Buzz is the heir to the legendary “Maggiolinesco” minibus; as well as the ID.3, it too has rear-wheel drive and the same 150 kW electric motor, equal to 204 horsepower with a maximum torque of 310 Nm. The battery has a capacity of 82 gross kWh (77 net) and manages the same charging power as the other ID models. Autonomy has not yet been communicated. These are the external dimensions: length 4,712 mm, total height 1,937 mm, loading height 619 mm, wheelbase 2,988 mm, width 1,985 mm excluding mirrors. The trunk holds up to 1,121 liters.
Volkswagen ID.Buzz cargo, the dimensions of the van
–
ID.Buzz Cargo is the van version, equipped with three front seats. Same mechanics as the twin, as well as the maximum speed, electronically limited to 145 km / h, and the turning circle, just over 11 meters. The dimensions differ in the load compartment, which has a capacity of over 3.9 cubic meters, then the loading height of 623 mm and the total height of 1,938 mm. A long wheelbase version will arrive in 2023. Like the five-seater model, it features an automated entry and exit parking system, as well as short-range warning and danger messages and semi-automatic control of lateral and longitudinal driving dynamics, at any speed. In addition, on-board software updates will be received remotely (i.e. the over the air system).
