De Volkskrant has wrongly fired literary critic Arjan Peters last year. The Court of Appeal ruled that today on appeal. In addition to a transition payment, Peters will also receive a gross payment of 370,000 euros. The employment relationship will not be restored.
Peters was suspended from active duty last year after an investigation into him was launched. He would personally contact writers prior to a review. This is unusual in reviews where judgment must be made independently.
The court concluded today that Peters did indeed send messages to multiple female authors via Facebook Messenger. The messages were about work-related topics in their own right, but were too colloquial in tone and were sometimes sent at night. Although the court understands that authors have been bothered by this, the court also states that there is no abuse of its dominant position, let alone systematically.
Peters will not return to the newspaper, by the way. The editor will receive a gross compensation of 370,000 euros, in addition to the transition payment that was already awarded to him by the subdistrict court.
