The stromboli erupted after a period of increased activity. The civil protection authority has therefore raised the warning level.
Rome – In Italy, Etna on Sicily and Stromboli on the island of the same name are two volcanoes that are constantly active. Also known is Vesuvius near Naples, which destroyed the Roman Pompeii. But since it last erupted in 1944, there has been calm, but that doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous.
Stromboli erupts: glowing lava flows into the sea
Now the approximately 930 meter high Stromboli has spoken again, and in a spectacular way. On Sunday morning (October 9th), the volcano on the Mediterranean island north of Sicily caused a natural spectacle with a stronger eruption – and moments of shock among the residents. As a video shows, a torrent of lava gushed out of the crater in the morning and made its way downhill. At the point where the glowing lava poured into the sea, thick plumes of smoke rose.
The eruption was preceded by a period of high eruptive activity, with a large explosion on September 29 and some short-lived lava overflows between September 27 and October 8, according to a statement from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. There was no information about damage or injuries as of Sunday evening.
After eruption of Stromboli: Warning level is raised
The civil protection authority has raised the warning level from yellow to orange as a result of the eruption. This is the third highest of a total of four warning levels. In a statement, she referred to the general advice given by the mayor of Lipari, to whose municipality Stromboli, which has a population of a few hundred people, belongs. In it, residents and tourists were asked not to leave the house and to protect their mouth, nose, head and eyes from the ashes. Anyone on a boat should steer into the open sea.
The Stromboli erupts particularly regularly, and has thus already become a tourist attraction. Sunday’s event was so powerful that seismic devices struck.
