Volcanic eruption: Ecuador issues tsunami warning in Galapagos

The National Tsunami Warning Center of Ecuador issued a tsunami warning on Saturday for the island of Santa Cruz, in the center of the Galapagos archipelago, after identifying marine disturbances as a result of the volcanic eruption in Tonga, in the South Pacific.

“According to the tidal records of Santa Cruz and Baltra (Galapagos Islands), there are currently sea disturbances generated by the volcanic eruption that have reached the coasts of the Galapagos Islands since 11:43 am local time,” announced the National Tsunami Center of the Institute. Oceanographic and Antarctic Navy (Inocar).

The entity also stated on Twitter that “significant variations in sea level are recorded in Baía Academia, on the island of Santa Cruz, which is why a tsunami warning is issued for Puerto Ayora”, the capital of the island.

The Center reported that “for the rest of the sites on the Galápagos Islands, the tsunami observation status is maintained, as well as for the mainland coast of the country”, located about 1,000 kilometers east of the archipelago.

“Other points on the mainland and the island coast may experience similar disturbances, which will be communicated in due course,” the note added.

Inocar reported hours earlier that it was still studying the threat of a tsunami generated by the action of an undersea volcano in the South Pacific. oceanic region.
