Origin, family and youth: Vladimir Putin was born on October 7, 1952 in Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg. His family was deeply affected by the German invasion of the Soviet Union. His father, Vladimir Spiridonovich Putin, a factory worker, fought in the navy against the Germans, his mother Marija Ivanovna Putina, a factory worker, survived the siege of the city by the Wehrmacht from September 1941 to January 1944.

From the summer of 1998, Putin was simultaneously deputy head of the presidential administration and director of the domestic secret service FSB. Former companions of the FSB are said to be among his few confidants to this day. Yeltsin appointed Putin Prime Minister, the head of government, in August 1999.
