In the Roubaix Velodrome, the Veronese fails to get on the podium in the race in which he was one of the favorites. Silver to the Belgian Dens, bronze to the British Britton
In a magical day for the blue colors, Elia Viviani fails to make the appointment with the podium at the World Championship in Roubaix. In the scratch in which he was one of the favorites, the Veronese does not go beyond the ninth place in the race won by the French Donovan Grondin ahead of the Belgian Tuur Dens and the British Rhys Britton. Viviani was in a good position up to four laps to go, then he lacked the energy to go and sprint with the leaders. So far Elia had won three medals at the Track World Championships: two silvers in scratch (2011) and in the Americana (2015) and a bronze in the Omnium in 2015. At the Olympics, in the Omnium, he was gold in Rio 2016 and bronze in Tokyo 2020.
Scratch is, in short, a road race that takes place on the track: 15 km, 60 laps, there are no flying sprints that give points for the final classification. It is all played in a road-like final sprint. And Viviani, who has built her career always alternating road and track, is a sprinter. Which this time lacked the right flicker.
