Vittorio Sgarbi learned of Maurizio Costanzo’s death while he was in live connection with Myrta Merlino during Aria Che Tira.
“It’s terrible, our father is a monster, your father, the inventor of this television with so many guests”, were his hot words after the presenter interrupted the speech to give him the news.
“I was convinced that Maurizio was immortal and in a certain sense he is, because he is still here among us, with us. Indeed we are Costanzo, he lives in us”, says the art critic and undersecretary for culture interviewed from the Corriere della Sera. “He was my father – he adds – of Lilli Gruber, of Nicola Porro, of Massimo Giletti, of Paolo Del Debbio, of Corrado Formigli, of Giovanni Floris, of all of us who are his testamentary legacy, he who has not a dolphin never chosen, just as Berlusconi did not want it, that when he leaves he will leave no one like him.
Maurizio, on the other hand, has many children of a TV model, an unrepeatable mix of news, theater and cinema in which the unexpected is the key to success”. The first meeting between the two dates back to 1987: “Costanzo called me as an art critic, we immediately quarreled, because he had invited a very boring guy”.
“Maurizio intuited a truth – continues Sgarbi – that the unexpected on TV is like a road accident, you can’t resist and you stop and watch. He was like a meteorite that fell on Italian television. There is nothing left of Mike Bongiorno, perhaps the same will happen with Pippo Baudo, Costanzo instead will be eternal, indeed he already is, he is still here ”.
Maurizio Costanzo’s funeral home will be set up tomorrow and the day after tomorrow in the Sala della Protomoteca in the Campidoglio, while the funeral will take place on Monday 27 February, at 3 pm, in the Artists’ Church in Piazza del Popolo.
