Viterbo kills his 10-year-old son with a stab in the throat and injures his mother. Arrested for murder, the man had a ban on approaching the woman and the child
What happened in the province of Viterbo, edited by Vetralla, leaves you speechless, but once again numerous questions arise spontaneously. While the most accredited hypothesis at the moment on the motive of the gesture seems to be that of the vengeance from Mirko Tomkow, 44-year-old Polish citizen, towards his 35-year-old wife Marlola, we asked the criminologist Sergio Caruso, expert in family crimes, even in this case it can be said that “the raptus does not exist”.
Let’s start from the fact that Mattias’s father, Mirko Tomkow, had a ban on approaching his partner and the little one. It does not seem to me a negligible element …
My experience as a criminologist and consultant in many news cases allows me to affirm that unfortunately many crimes take place in the family environment, such as in Trieste, a case we are analyzing, and this makes us understand that the big problem of this is dysfunctional relationships. In the light of this umpteenth tragedy, stricter surveillance measures are necessary, since there are many subjects who, before, during and after, give dangerous alarm signals, unfortunately underestimated.
Mirko has been defined as a taciturn and aggressive man, prone to becoming violent, for example under the influence of alcohol. Another element that does not make us feel comfortable in an already compromised family situation. I err?
The danger is also and above all seen in the silences which are a strong indicator of discomfort, not to mention the disruptive effects triggered by drugs that increase aggression and violence.
The hypothesis that seems to prevail over the motive is that of revenge, a gesture against his wife. In your opinion?
In a serious and scientific criminology, hypotheses are not made, the papers are read and an analysis is carried out. Contrary to what happens in football, politics or low-level talk shows where everyone is an expert in everything. We can however say and affirm that the characteristics of filicide are revenge against the partner, in which the greatest good is killed in order to do the most harm.
Tomkow was also found unconscious by the police. Would a (attempted) homicide-suicide support the thesis of revenge?
In many violent crimes the offender, the one who commits the crime, cannot resist the sense of guilt and takes his own life, but many times they are staged, it depends on the cases.
Can you explain the case of the male Medea, what drives a man to kill his son to take revenge against his wife?
Filicide, which is very widespread, both in the male and in the female, has some matrices in common. Revenge against the partner is a pathological vulnerability of the perpetrator of the crime. Sometimes children are killed to save them from an adverse fate, obviously in a distorted reality.
If revenge were the motive then, wasn’t it predictable? The raptus does not exist, she says. Can this also be said in this case? According to the words of the mayor of Vetralla “it seemed a family like any other” …
They all say so. “It seemed like a peaceful and quiet family”, but in reality this is only a semblance and to improve things we must admit the truth, even the unpleasant one. All crimes do not happen by chance, there are always warning signs and previous episodes that go to outline violent personalities. That’s why nothing happens overnight, that’s why the raptus doesn’t exist.
