Omicron multiplies better in the upper respiratory tract than in the lungs, which reduces the risk of coronavirus. This was told to Lente.ru by the virologist of the Gamaleya Center, Doctor of Medical Sciences Anatoly Altshtein.
However, omicron should not be considered harmless, as it can still affect the lungs and cause pneumonia. It just does it less often compared to the delta, the virologist noted.
Most often, it causes symptoms familiar from colds. “If the lungs are not affected and if the virus does not go to other organs, then the disease will pass relatively easily. For several days, a person will have a temperature, symptoms such as cough, sore throat, runny nose, ”Altshtein shared.
Earlier, the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova said that COVID-19 has lost the ability to penetrate into the lung tissue, but it cannot be argued that it will not restore this ability in the future.
Virologist Anatoly Altshtein also noted that people who have recovered from COVID-19 and are vaccinated are less susceptible to the virus. This can explain the quarantine relief provided for them.
