Vinfast It is currently focused on launching its electric SUV range on the US market later this year, but that doesn’t mean the company doesn’t intend to broaden its horizons. The Vietnamese carmaker has in fact targeted a new market segment on which it could soon make its debut: that of electric pick-ups. Craig Westbrook, Chief Service Officer of the US division of Vinfast, officially opened to this hypothesis, explaining that the platform available to the company allows it to explore other types of vehicles.
“We want to meet the needs of the market – his words reported by Reuters in reference to the question of whether Vinfast would ever try to sell an electric pickup – If we decide that this is what the market needs and that it particularly fits our brand, then I think we absolutely could, yes. It’s something we should consider ”. Recall that Vinfast started building electric vehicles in Vietnam at the end of last year: the company’s goal is to switch to fully electric production by 2023. Making space in the battery pick-up segment in the United States, however, will not be easy: the competition is in fact very thick and fierce, and is represented by rivals of the caliber of Ford, Rivian and General Motors, just to name a few.
Meanwhile, the Vietnamese carmaker is putting in place the final details before its landing in the United States SUV range: The company’s plans to begin vehicle production at a North Carolina plant by July 2024 remain on track. We recall that Vinfast plans to open the US plant with an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, and where it will assemble the VF8 and VF9 SUVs. Today the company counts nearly 8,000 bookings for its crossovers in the United Statesand between 40,000 and 50,000 worldwide, including markets such as Vietnam, Europe and Canada.
