James Gunn was going to show Vilma as a lesbian, but Warner stopped him
Although for a long time there was talk of Vilma’s sexual orientation, who wanted to take his story to the movies was James Gunn. In 2002, the famous director had in his hands the responsibility of placing on the big screen “Scooby-Doo”, a live action film starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini and Rowan Atkinson.
With a first script that could not see the light, in 2020 Gunn was asked what his version of Vilma would be like. He replied that she would be presented as a lesbian, but could never realize his idea. This, because of the buts that Warner Bros.
In July 2020, Gunn replied to a fan who questioned him about Vilma’s sexual orientation in “Scooby-Doo” (2002). On Twitter, the user asked him to work on a third of his films and that it present the character of Linda Cardellini as a lesbian.
“I tried! In 2001, Vilma was explicitly gay in my original script, but the studio kept toning it down, so it became somewhat ambiguous (the filmed version). Then this was not seen anymore (in the released version) and she finally had a boyfriend (in the sequel),” she wrote.
For his part, Tony Cervone, who served as a producer on the series “Scooby-Doo! Mysteries SA”, confirmed in 2020 that she was a lesbian in her version of the franchise.
