Did you know that there is a liftable barrier in front of the FrieslandCampina parking garage? Yes, they have a barrier there at the Chocomel. Just like the chocolate drink, the barrier is typically something that makes you think: what else do you need to change? Well, apparently there are options. Because in Australia they now use this special alternative to a barrier.
The Softstop Barrier System is a small waterfall on which a very large stop sign is projected using a projector. An advantage is that the stop sign is quite noticeable. This is apparently desperately needed, because there were quite a few truck drivers who ignored stop signals and got their trucks stuck in the tunnel. But there is another big advantage of the water curtain.
A barrier is not always suitable
On a main road you cannot simply lower a barrier for moving traffic. Then you get a little Final Destination-scenes. Moreover, it may be that emergency services still have to enter the tunnel – and then you don't want a barrier blocking the way. The Softstop Barrier offers a solution: it stands out like a piece of spinach on your teeth, but you can still get through it.
We can also think of disadvantages. If the thing is suddenly activated, you will get a big splash of water over your windows and you will temporarily see nothing. If you just keep your steering wheel straight, nothing will happen, but if everyone reacted perfectly in traffic, there would be fewer accidents. We have not yet heard of plans to apply the Softstop Barrier in the Netherlands or Belgium.
