Florida, United States.- The powerful hurricane “Milton” made landfall in Sarasota, Florida, at 8:30 p.m. local time (6:30 p.m. CDMX time), according to the United States National Hurricane Center.
Hurricane Milton made landfall on Siesta Key, a barrier island off Sarasota with white sand beaches and about 5,500 residents.
The community is about 70 miles south of Tampa. While the city did not suffer a direct hit, Hurricane Milton was still producing deadly storm surge and powerful winds in the area. The cyclone had maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour when it made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida. The storm was causing deadly storm surge across much of Florida’s Gulf Coast, including densely populated areas such as Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota and Fort Myers.
“Milton” fed on the extremely warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and reached Category 5 status twice.
Milton has fluctuated in intensity and became a Category 3 hurricane in the afternoon. Millions of people were ordered to evacuate and bridges were closed. The storm brought rain, tornadoes and tropical storm-force winds to the Florida coast.
