With diesel and gasoline in the spotlight due to the emission of polluting gases, the automobile industry is looking for a “good, nice and cheap” substitute, that is, one that has a performance similar to that of fossil fuels, that does not pollute and that has reasonable prices. There is an element that some claim meets the three rules, the most abundant in the universe, hydrogen. However, there are only three vehicles that use this fuel registered in Spain.
In this chapter of Give it a spinWe visited the National Hydrogen Center of Puertollano (Ciudad Real), where they investigate and promote the use of this element and demand public aid for its expansion in the automotive industry. This center and the supporters of this fuel trust that business daring or public aid will end up unlocking the loop that acts as a plug for the introduction of hydrogen on a massive scale. Although it has not yet become a reality, there are recent studies such as one by BloombergNEF that estimates that by 2050 hydrogen will solve a quarter of the world’s electrical needs. Another, from the World Hydrogen Council, assures that in this decade that we have just begun, all the applications of this fuel will be profitable.
